Smart Repair Top Tips

Our latest technical tip is focused on smart repair, recently this has become a very popular method of repairing vehicles. If done correctly, with the right materials and the correct equipment, it can have great results.

What makes a smart repair?

The repair needs to be no more than 10cm from a natural breakline – bonnets, roofs and boots should be avoided as these areas have sun impact on the clearcoat edge. If there are any dents on the vehicle these should also be no more than 25mm across. If the repair meets all of this criteria then you are on your way!

As with any repair cleanliness is key! Make sure that before you start the repair you polish the vehicle with a good variable speed machine, this will save time and guarantee a clean surface for your clearcoat edge. The next step is to ensure you are using the right equipment, small sanders and blocks are vital. You should also use very fine abrasives as you will be applying a very small amount of materials so it won’t fill any prep marks.

Small spray guns are also excellent at keeping the repair as small as possible and making sure that you can’t notice the edge of the colour. Again, cleanliness is important so ensure you use a tak cloth between coats of basecoat to make sure you don’t get a buildup of overspray.

Infrared is an excellent benefit to allow you to repair the vehicle quickly, allowing you to polish the clearcoat edge. We hope these tips will help improve your car repair process!
