Technical Tip: The importance of protective masks within the Bodyshop

Protective masks in the Bodyshop

Our latest technical tip is focusing on the importance of breathing protection within the Bodyshop.

When working in the collision industry, there is nothing more important than our own health and the health of the people around us. It is therefore extremely important to do everything possible to make sure that any unwanted dusts or chemicals are not inhaled.

The most efficient way to ensure the workplace is a healthy working environment is by implementing work shop precautions. Not only is a good dust extraction hoover / unit essential in removing dust created during sanding, but regular maintenance of the spray booths and ventilation systems ensures that any contaminates are removed from the air before they come into contact with individuals.

In addition to the dust extraction precautions outlined above, Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and respiratory protective equipment (RPE) play a part in the breathing protection process. There are many types of protective masks available and ensuring you select the right mask for the job at hand is imperative.

Protective masks are needed for all spray applications as working with isocyanate paints, in particular, can cause occupational asthma, as well as other health problems. If Bodyshop users are properly protected at all times this reduces the exposure risks to isocyanates and it is now possible for protected workers to reduce their exposure risk to almost zero. To conform to the latest EN standards, painters must wear suitable overalls, gloves and a full face air supplied respirator.

For any spray application we recommend a clean air supplied air fed mask; this will ensure a positive air pressure that covers all different user face sizes. In mixing rooms, workers should be using overalls, gloves and goggles to protect themselves from paint splashes and a suitable vapour mask to stop them breathing in paint fumes whilst working. It is also worth noting your booth ‘Clearance time’, this is the time it takes for your booth to clear of paint mist and vapour. It is essential not to remove or lift your visor until the booth is clear.

For nuisance, toxic dust and vapour there are different types of protection available. A daily disposable mask has a valve which helps to expel unwanted air, and these come in different levels of protection depended on what you are exposed to. A semi disposable toxic dust mask has an adjustable head strap, comfortable rubber face fit seal that is valved and can be used for up to 28 days, and it should be stored in an air tight box. Make sure you are using the right mask for your daily working environment!
