How to look after your Bodyshop and PPG paint in Winter

As we are now mid – Autumn and the clocks will soon be changing, it’s time to start thinking about how to prepare your Bodyshop and PPG paint for Winter.

Within the Bodyshop lots of improvements can be made to help prepare for the cold season. Dust and dirt can cause serious problems throughout the car repair process, meaning winter is the perfect time to have a big clean up in your workshop! A cleaner workshop will not only make it easier to find products more quickly but it can also provide a safer work environment, as overflowing bins can be a serious risk of fire, as it is easy for a welding spark to ignite the overhanging content of the bin.

The spray booth or spray area is also an essential area for cleanliness. Consider the time you spend removing dirt inclusions as a costly factor and by simply cleaning the Bodyshop more frequently you will be more cost effective. If dirt is not removed prior to applying colour on a wet on wet system then you will find grey primer marks showing when you carry out your final polishing. If you have dirt inclusion in your basecoat then this can be another serious problem, as if you don’t remove the dirt completely before the clearcoat application this could lead to having to rework the whole of the panel – a very costly and time consuming problem. To ensure you have a clean painting environment to spray in you should also consider painting the floor and walls, as this will help reduce the collection of dust and will provide better lighting to work in.

As well as ensuring you have a clean working environment, it is also essential to check your mixing room heating to see if it is properly working, and to check that your water based products are kept above 5 degrees, as this will ensure they are kept to a high standard. To make sure that your clearcoat is able to spray correctly at the right viscosity you will also need to make sure that it is not stored on the cold floor, as this will affect the quality of the product. If you consider these basic tips for your Bodyshop you should avoid having problems with your products that are caused by cold weather and the quality of your work will also be improved.
